Do you know what batik is, and how it is done? It is a dying method which is very popular with teens and even adults in the US. What do you need to do this interesting hobby? The first thing you will need is a clean white cotton T-shirt. You’ll also need washable school glue, a little table salt, a trigger squirt bottle, some old hangers and of course your dye. You should use a dye that doesn’t require boiling water. Here is how it is done: Place some old cardboard in between the layers of the T-shirt. Paint a design with the glue onto one side. Allow to dry. Pour about a tablespoon of salt into your bottle. Pour in your powdered dye. Fill the bottle halfway with warm water, about two cups and shake it well. Add about two more cups of water and let it sit until the water cools to room temperature. This is important because you need warm water to dissolve the dye and salt. If you spray it on your shirts warm, it will actually melt part of the glue and won’t have a bright white effect when you wash the T-shirt. Hang it up outside. Begin spraying. Let it dry overnight. The next day, wash the T-shirt with warm water and see the result.
